Look for an interest in communicating.  This may be as early as 3-4 months; may start focusing on your gestures by 4-6 months; may attempt to imitate gestures by 5-7 months, some babies begin around 8-10 months depending on exposure.

Let your child explore so that you can focus on his/her interests.  Use signs relevant to the situation/in context.  Make sure to have your child’s attention before introducing a sign and sign in the child’s sight line.

Find the right time(s) of day for your child’s ability to focus.

*  Incorporate signing while reading books.

*  Sign with other adults/teach signs to other caregivers.

*  Be patient!   Repeat the signs frequently.

*  Be creative, consistent, playful!

*  Reward your child’s efforts!
