Baby Sign Language?

While some people call Baby Sign Language “BSL”, that’s actually the acronym for British Sign Language. Baby Sign Language is not a language of its own…just like “Baby English” is not a language in its own right either.

There’s a difference between speech and language, a difference between language and communication. We aim to provide families with improved communication that begins with accessible language which lends itself to motivating speech.

At Baby Fingers, we teach American Sign Language (ASL) that babies approximate on their own just like they do with spoken language. They start with babbling and refine from there, whether with their hands or with their voices. Babies in our program typically use both! Babies who have access to language early on acquire a larger vocabulary and a keen interest in communicating.

“Babies exposed to sign language babble with their hands, even if they are not deaf. The finding supports the idea that human infants have an innate sensitivity to the rhythm of language and engage it however they can, the researchers who made the discovery claim.” -Alison Motluk
