Living with kids in a big city has its challenges, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. The most difficult moments were probably with the double stroller when I had a baby and a toddler, having to get up or down the subway steps, or trying to walk along a sidewalk covered in snow.
But we’ve actually grown to love the conveniences of city living. Great shopping in walking distance – organic foods, books and clothing, toy stores and more. Public Libraries with children’s areas! Amazing parks surround us with plenty of greenery and several playgrounds. Free events in the parks, including concerts and walking tours. Incredible museums all around, many with free days once a week or pay as you wish admission. Kids classes galore! I began Baby Fingers when my older son was 6+ months to add to those great offerings. There are good schools of all sorts. We’ve navigated the application process for every phase of education so far (yes, preschool through high school; even public schools require an application) – hopefully college applications will be a breeze!
Walking through the city, there are teachable moments at every turn… stopping at the many parking garages to check for cars exiting or entering before we cross; the safe way to approach a (friendly?) dog coming our way; watching our step for those mounds of dog “poop” that weren’t scooped up; learning to recognize and trust fire fighters and police officers as well as parks and recreation personnel; whether it’s safe to cross a one-way street with no oncoming cars even if the sign says “don’t walk”; assisting someone who is blind or elderly to cross the street; navigating the homelessness and deciphering when, where, or how to offer a donation.
During my pregnancies and in the early days with an infant, it was wonderful to walk through the neighborhood and in or near the parks, immediately bonding with others in a similar phase of parenting. The kids made fast friends at all ages, as everyone in the playground was looking for a playmate. And all parents were grateful for another watchful eye, as we always looked out for each other.
I truly love city living, and feel that my children have benefited from the experience as well. We continue to figure out how to make the most of our space. Murphy beds and high shelves are great space savers. So are drop-leaf tables and folding chairs. We make use of space under the couch and under the beds. Our home is cozy. Sometimes crowded, but definitely cozy with its own special charm.
