My husband was actually the first one to hold our older child after his birth 21 years ago. He was born 8 days late and I had an unexpected C-section after a long attempt to deliver. While I was being stitched up, my husband – holding my hands the entire time – asked to hold our crying baby. As soon as he began to sing, the crying stopped. Immediately, our son recognized the familiar voice and melody he had been hearing in utero for 41 weeks. As a music therapist I found it so rewarding. As a new mom, it was beyond anything I’d ever felt. In his first moments of parenthood, my husband transitioned seamlessly to Dad. Not every moment that followed has gone so smoothly for any of us but it was a moment to cherish.
Consider a Baby Fingers class this summer for Dad – something to foster the parent/child bond (learn sign language together!) and something special just for him (maybe our essential oils workshop).
